My grandmother Phyllis Parker spent 30-plus years as a teacher in Fairfield and has profoundly shaped my understanding of community, education, and service. Growing up, I saw firsthand the dedication she brought to her work, not just as an educator, but as someone who truly cared about the well-being and success of her students. Her commitment to nurturing young minds and her belief in the power of education to transform lives has deeply inspired me.

Her experience taught me the importance of investing in our schools and supporting our educators, who play such a crucial role in shaping the future of our town. It also instilled in me a deep respect for the values of hard work, compassion, and community involvement.

Through her, I learned that a strong community is built on the foundation of quality education and the willingness to serve others. As I run for town council, I carry with me the lessons she imparted: to listen, to be patient, and to work tirelessly for the betterment of all. Her legacy motivates me to ensure that Fairfield remains a place where education is valued, and where every resident has the opportunity to thrive.

Transparency in the classroom

A few years ago, I was a board member for my children’s charter school, I quickly learned that parents play a vital role in the education of children and are undoubtedly the foundation of their success. I firmly believe parents should know what’s being taught to their children in the classroom so that they can be not only be involved in but better understand the curriculum.

  As a parent, I acknowledge I wasn’t always the expert and if I had a lack of knowledge as to what was being taught, I found myself searching for the information or contacting the teacher directly. Often too late to ensure the work was turned in on time. I believe schools could improve the effectiveness of parents’ instructional activities by making the content and resources available to parents along with teaching suggestions and tips.
